Women's Oral Health During Pregnancy

Perhaps one of the most important factors to consider with regard to pregnancy and dental health is that women’s oral health condition provides a direct indicator as to her child’s overall health status while she’s pregnant. As a matter of fact, one of the best ways to reduce the chances of cavities in young children is to improve overall oral health in women who are pregnant. It is important to note that women who are pregnant are typically more prone to gum disease as well as cavities. Without question, oral health is a critical part of complete prenatal care. Maintaining optimum oral health during pregnancy only serves to help the unborn child while invitro and after birth.

Perhaps one of the major issues with regard to pregnant women and dental health is that of periodontal disease. Studies have shown that nearly ¾ of pregnant women have some level of gingivitis. As most know, this is an early stage of periodontal disease that causes the gums to become swollen and red. The swelling and redness are due to inflammation and may actually be worse than normal do to fluctuating hormones while a woman is pregnant. When gingivitis goes untreated, there can be bone loss and gum disease.

Another issue with regard to pregnancy is that of dental cavities. Reports indicate that women who are pregnant may indeed have a higher risk of cavities because their eating habits change. This is a major consideration because women who have high levels of cavity causing bacteria in their system may expose unborn children to that same bacteria. When there is early-stage contact with bacteria of this type by an infant, the end result can be an increased risk of cavities in early childhood. These are just a few examples of the importance of good women’s oral health during pregnancy.
